First Baptist Church of Evans could soon become part of First Baptist Church of Augusta.

Will Dyer, the senior pastor at First Baptist Church of Augusta, said the two churches are scheduled to vote on the merger on Sunday, May 21 for the Evans church, and Wednesday, May 24 for the Augusta one.

“The First Baptist Church of Evans will merge into the First Baptist Church of Augusta,” Dyer said. “So, their members will become members of the First Baptist Church of Augusta; their property will become property of the First Baptist Church of Augusta; Phillip (Hedgecoth), their pastor, will become a pastor on the staff of the First Baptist Church of Augusta.”

Dyer added that he didn’t want to say more because the merger is not yet official, but once it is, there will be a celebration.

“For us, we are so excited about the future of what will happen with their church merging into our church and the possibilities for us moving forward,” Dyer said. “Our greatest hope is that we’ll continue to be witnesses for the kingdom of God and for Jesus all throughout the CSRA.”

According to the First Baptist Church of Evans website, the church was founded on Aug. 10, 1930 and was created so there could be a Baptist church in a rural community. The church is partners with the Southern Baptist Convention, the Augusta Association of Baptist Church and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

First Baptist Church of Evans is located at 515 N. Bel Air Road. First Baptist Church of Augusta is located at 3500 Walton Way Ext.
