Play has been suspended at Laney’s home football game Friday due to shots fired.
An Augusta Press correspondent on the scene reported hearing multiple gunshots during Friday’s game against Thomson.
When the shots were being fired people took cover and went low to the ground, according to Chad Cook, who is on the scene.
He said Richmond County deputies responded within minutes.
According to an email from Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Kimberly Lee, the incident occurred around 9:06 p.m.
A fight broke out on the visitors’ side of Laney High School stadium, and and Richmond County Board of Education Public Safety Officers responded.
“Shortly thereafter, shots were reportedly fired near the gymnasium and subsequently it was found that two vehicles were struck by what appeared to be gunfire. Two subjects have been detained, three firearms were recovered. The investigation has now been turned over to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. This investigation is active and no further information will be released at this time,” Lee’s email said.
The Richmond County School System also issued a statement.
“Due to gunshots being fired in the area near the Lucy C. Laney Football Stadium, play was suspended during the Lucy C. Laney vs. Thomson game this evening.”
The press release also mentioned how School Safety and Security Officers were “en route” when the fired shots were heard.
“Richmond County School Safety and Security Officers were alerted to questionable activity happening after a group of patrons exited the stadium.”
Additional Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and additional School Safety and Security officers also responded to support safe evacuation of the stadium and parking lots.
“The incident is not believed to involve Richmond County School System students and is under investigation. No additional information is available at this time,” said the press release.
