In the Kitchen With Vera: Follow the Yellow Brick Road to find Lou’s Poppyseed Pound Cake

This show aired the first time at the end of Season 8, but we are excited to air it again as we are in so many more markets now and the content is so good.  We are also building our SM platform to enhance the reshows to bring NEW life. We put a “twist” on this by featuring me as Dorothy and have included the poppy fields, and I will include my love for that movie in my script for the week.

As the middle of five children, I’ve always said I got busted from both sides: Older siblings thought I was too young and younger siblings thought I was too bossy! Well, maybe some things never change, and they may each still feel the same way about me.

Vera Stewart as Dorothy in the poppy field.

One of my favorite memories as a child was watching “The Wizard of Oz” for the first time on our brand new COLOR TV.  I can remember being so scared of the scene where Dorothy didn’t think she would make it back to the house when the storm got bad and then she woke up and opened the door and the scenery was in living color! It was magical.

When one of our team members, Megan Whittaker, suggested in our monthly social media meeting to reinvent this reshow by having us do a play on “The Wizard of Oz,” Dorothy and the Poppy fields, I was ALL IN! I must admit, I think a blonde wig might have been more becoming on me, but what the heck. I had so much fun being in costume and being art-directed by our amazing team at WierStewart in developing the reel that will accompany the marketing of this show.

Lou’s Poppyseed Pound Cake

Spending quality time with my younger sister, Lou Childs, the namesake of this cake, was amazing.  We laughed and had such a great time remembering the good ole days and wondering how time has passed so quickly.

Hopefully, this will be an approachable recipe for you and a great idea to make and freeze to use for Easter or for Masters. Here’s the link https://www.veryvera.com/recipes/recipe/lous-poppyseed-pound-cake/ Remember, every cake that left my building was frozen before shipping and the reviews were always fantastic. Just follow the directions – just like the yellow brick road!

Watch the episode at 12:30 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 p.m. Saturday on WJBF-TV.
