He was a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church for over 55 years, serving in many different positions, including finance chairman and treasurer. He was a member of the church choir the Betterly Sunday School class. Family members, in addition to his wife, include sons Gregory Slavens and Bradley Slavens, daughter Jennifer Hobbs and son-in-law Aaron Hobbs, step granddaughters Sidney and Stephanie Hobbs, brother Harold Slavens (Sharyn) of Phoenix, AZ, sisters Helen Engle of Phoenix, AZ, Wanda Ruth (Jerry) of Rainbow City, AL, and Marietta Slavens of Tucson, AZ, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Vernice Slavens, and sister and brother-in-law, Wendy and Dave Shurr.
