Opinion: The Deception of the Abortion Movement

Editor’s note: A 2002 World Net Daily article was used as a source by the writer for much of the information in this article. It is suggested that the reader return to Rev. Harrell’s article entitled “Faith and Choice” from Dec 12, 2021 and then read the article for today. A link is included below.

Faith and Choice – Rev. Bill Harrell – Dec 12, 2021

A couple of weeks ago, The Augusta Press ran an article of mine concerning Faith and Choice.  There was a lot of good response to that article which took the common sense approach to one of the most discussed subjects of our day: abortion.  This subject has been kicked around since 1973 when the Supreme Courts decided that abortion is legal in America.  Now, in this day, they are currently revisiting the issue of abortion and many think that Roe vs Wade will be overturned. That is the hope of every person who values life and believes what the Bible says about it.

In my possession is an article that was published by World Net Daily in 2002.  I have had this article for all these years and now is a good time to present some of it to our readers as we are thinking about the subject of abortion and what the Supreme Court might do at this time.  The aforementioned article is entitled:

‘Pro-Choice Co-founder rips Abortion Industry.  Doctors, clinic staffers tell shocking behind-the-scenes story.

As many will remember, in the beginning days of the push to legalize abortion in America, there were several well known individuals who were continually on the television and the printed page touting the medical and social reasons to legalize abortion.  You will remember such slogans as….”Women must have control over their own bodies.”  “Safe and legal abortion is every woman’s right.”

“Who decides? You decide.”  Then there was: “Freedom of choice-a basic American right.”  Now, listen to several people who were crucial in the abortion movement as they tell the truth in this World Net Daily article.

Bernard Nathanson, M.D, co-founder of pro-abortion group NARAL said, “We were looking for some sexy, catchy slogans to capture public opinion.”  “They were very cynical slogans, just as all of these slogans today are very, very cynical.”  This man was one of the principal architects and strategists of the abortion movement in the United States.  He tells an astonishing story.  He and Lawrence Lader, who had written a book entitled “Abortion” were “perfect for each other” according to Nathanson.  These two men sat down and organized what we now know as NARAL, later renamed the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League.  With Betty Friedan they set up NARAL and began their strategy.

They began to quote “poll” numbers showing that legal, sophisticated, enlightened abortion was a necessity.  They said, “knowing that if a true poll was taken, we would be soundly defeated, we simply fabricated the results of fictional polls.  They then announced to the media that 60% of the American public were in favor of permissive abortion.  This is the tactic of the self-fulfilling lie.  Few people care to be in the minority.  We aroused enough sympathy to sell our program of permissive abortion by fabricating the number of illegal abortions done annually in the U.S.  The actual figure was approaching 100,000 but the figure we gave to the media repeatedly was 1,000,000.”

The article continues:” Repeating the big lie often enough convinces the public.  The number of women dying from illegal abortions was around 200-250 annually.

The figure we constantly fed to the media was 10,000.  These false figures took root in the consciousness of Americans, convincing many that we needed to crack the abortion law.

The article continues, “Another myth we fed to the public through the media was that legalizing abortion would only mean that the abortions taking place illegally would then be done legally.  In fact, of course, abortion is now being used as a primary method of birth control in the U.S. and the annual number of abortions has increased by 1,500 percent since legalization…(remember this article was written in 2002.  The percentage is much higher today.)

What was the result of NARAL’s brilliantly deceitful marketing campaign bolstered by thoroughly fraudulent research?  In New York, the law outlawing abortion had been on the books for 140 years.  “In two years of work, we at NARAL struck that law down,” Nathanson said.  We lobbied the legislature, we captured the media, we spent money on public relations.  Our first year’s budget was $7,500.  Of that, $5,000 was allotted to a public relations firm to persuade the media of the correctness of our position.  That was in 1969.”  New York immediately became the abortion capital of the eastern half of the United States.

Dr. Nathanson said that they immediately set up the Center for Reproductive and Sexual Health (C.R.A.S.H).  Here is a brief description of it:  10 operating rooms, 35 doctors, 85 nurses were utilized.  It operated seven days a week from 8 a.m. to midnight.  He states, “we did 120 abortions every day in that clinic.  At the end of two years that I was the director, we had done 60,000 abortions.”  “I myself, with my own hands, have done 5,000 abortions.  I have supervised another 10,000.”  “So, I have 75,000 abortions in my life.”

But, something happened to Nathanson, something profound, the article continues.  Just as it happened to countless other abortionists, abortion-clinic owners and staffers.  Just as it happened to Norma McCorvey, the real name for “Jane Doe”, the real plaintiff in the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion decision.  These pioneers of the abortion-rights movement have all arrived at the same conclusion – that abortion is the unjust killing of a human baby, and have come over to the other side of the raging abortion war.

Now, folks, if this article by World Net Daily authored in 2002 does not get your attention, then nothing else will.  Abortion, as I showed in my article “Faith and Choice” is the intentional taking of a human baby’s life.  It is done for selfish convenience almost 100% of the time.  Some will argue the “life of the mother” argument for abortion.  If all abortions except those done to save the mother’s life were not allowed, abortion would be virtually non-existent.  The Supreme Court should have no trouble making the right decision this time.  Let’s all pray that this scourge upon our society will be erased and that God’s judgment upon America for this grievous sin will be eradicated.

Reverend William (Bill) Harrell has been in ministry 48 years. He served as the pastor of Abilene Baptist Church in Martinez, GA for over 30 of those years. He can be reached at [email protected]. You can also check out his blog at www.williamfharrell.com

  1. No coincidence that all these champions of abortion mentioned, past & present, are very wealthy white privilege liberals, while the vast majority of babies aborted are, and always have been black.
With forethought and knowledge, the planned destabilization and setting adrift from their once secure harbor of faith an entire race & culture through immoral persuasion, for the duel ulterior purpose of profit and acquisitioning of political power.
White political power by the way.
Mastery over the now destabilized and imploding race and culture complete.
Mission accomplished they are now confident of.
Next time you see a public protest or march for ” abortion rights” just look the color of the majority of faces present
But can an entire people be dismayed and turned from understanding in perpetuity ?
There has always been a faithful remnant preserved.
God will never abandon those genuinely seeking truth, no matter how few they may be.
Divine restlessness is always the by-product of gross immorality for those seeking the deeper currents of life rather than death.
    As David wrote:
” This is the generation of them that seek Him, that seek Thy face, O Jacob,” (Psalm 24:6)

  2. The killing of infants, as a matter of convenience, cannot be defended on any moral basis. If there is any moral argument that supports this, I have yet to hear it. It also fails any reasonable logical examination. If the taking of an innocent life, without consent and as a matter of convenience, is morally permissible, then age is certainly no barrier and no one is safe.
