FAITH: Our Only Hope

(Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this column of those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of The Augusta Press.)

Over the past few days, I have been grieving in my heart over what happened in Uvalde, TX when a deranged person killed those children and adults in their school.  The first reaction to this event is one of horror and then I quickly ask this question: “How could something like this be happening in our America?”  This is the kind of thing that could happen somewhere else in the world but not here in Christian America.  How did we get to the place where our society has devolved to the point that one hears of this kind of event fairly often.  It might be in a grocery store, school or a business but people have lost the value for life it seems.

Let me give our readers a couple of things to think about.  There is a passage of Scripture which says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.” Psalms 33:12.   In many places, God’s Word assures us that our protection, safety and prosperity comes only from Him.  The more a nation adheres to God and His Word, the more they will be blessed and protected.  Conversely, the more a nation rejects the Lord, the more they will crumble and fall into all kinds of spiritual, moral and physical and societal  decay.  This is what is happening to America because we have told God that He is no longer wanted in the daily course of our lives.  On June 25, 1962, the Supreme Court ruled in the Engle vs Vitale case that school sponsored prayer as unconstitutional. This effectively kicked God out of the public schools and they have been going downhill ever since.  Anyone with even one modicum of intelligence can attest to the truth of that statement.  God has been ejected from the schools and from the public discourse in America and it has bred a nation full of rebellious people who have no common sense or even respect for life.

Who ever thought that, in this nation, we would not have the right to pray at a high school football game?  So, if even one person is offended by that prayer the school system can be sued for allowing it to take place.  I submit to you that many more are offended by not being able to offer a prayer for the safety of the players and the people in attendance.  For the sake of one, many are offended.  Makes no sense to me.  I think that if they are offended that they should simply leave the stadium during the prayer and return without losing their seat to someone else.  Or, wait to attend the game until after the prayer.  Or, do as the spoiled brat professional ball players are allowed to do: stay out of the stadium while the National Anthem is played.  Notice:  They haven’t stopped playing the National Anthem but they disallow a prayer to almighty God.  Doesn’t make sense to me if we want His blessings.

In the late eighties, George Barna, the pollster and author, gave a prophetic warning.  He said that in the future, the children would be the killers and criminals.  Well, it seems to me that he was right.  Think of the number of times in the recent past when a young person has committed heinous crimes as if there were no tomorrow or judgment much less the terrible ramifications of their actions in the present.  There are a number of contributing factors concerning bringing up a generation that is bent in such a direction that a number of them (especially the young) would commit the crimes we are hearing about on a far too regular basis.  But, we don’t have the time or space to deal with those contributing factors in this article.

But, to the point.  Without the blessings of God, we are as doomed as was Rome or Greece or any other nation which ignored Him.  He gives us, however, the recipe for peace and protection.  It is found in 2 Chronicles 7:14 where God says;

“If my people, who are called by my Name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”  That, my friends, is the recipe for life, peace and happiness.  Notice, God does not say….”If the wicked or if the general populace will humble themselves….”  He says….”If MY PEOPLE….”  That means all those who are His through Jesus Christ.  HIS PEOPLE….not the world.

The Christian people of America hold it within their hands to correct the course of America if they will do what God says to do in 2 Chronicles 7:14.   I was talking with a member of Congress a while back and he said that many in Congress and the Senate are now saying that this country is SO messed up that it will take an act of God to straighten it out.  No one has the answer.  No one knows what to do.  Left to us America is on a course of doom.  I don’t mean to be the bearer of such bad news but we have history as our witness that great nations have failed when they have gotten to the point that we are at in America today.  As I have said before, there is a “spirit of death” upon America for the murder of 64 million babies since the Supreme Court legalized abortion.  In the largest twenty-five of our American cities there is a total of 37,000,000 people.  Our country has killed 27 million more babies by abortion than the number of people who reside in our twenty-five largest cities.  And yet we ask God to bless us!  Our country is also accepting of lifestyles that the Bible condemns and God judges.  Our morals are bent is the wrong direction because we have “gone our own way” and thumbed our noses at God Himself. What do we expect Him to do….bless us anyway? I think that what is going on in America today is proof that God has taken His Hand of blessings off of our country and she is disintegrating right before our eyes.  Just Remember that His desire for us is that we would be in a right relationship with Him and prosper under his blessings.

Do we want to return to a day when Godly morality, honesty, a love for life, and a deep spiritual relationship to God is the norm?  Or, will our country continue down the path to destruction we are on?  We don’t have much further to go on that road to destruction.  If we are not careful, we will wind up like Rome, Greece, The Egyptian society and others.  We will be left as refuse alongside the road of history.  The ONLY thing that will save us is another Great Awakening as God brought in the world during the 18th and 19th centuries.  Without such an awakening and return to God our path is set and the ending is not going to be good.  We MUST employ 2 Chronicles 7:14 if we want to live and continue the greatest country in the history of the world and the only one founded upon the Judeo-Christian principles found in God’s Word.  We have lost our way and it is obvious.  But, if we return to OUR ONLY HOPE God will hear us and heal our land.

  1. I don’t hold out much hope that America will turn back to God unfortunately. In reality, I believe our country is headed in the opposite direction. I’m reminded of the huge uproar at the prospect that Roe v Wade could be overturned. Barricades were placed around the Supreme Court and protesters picked outside the personal residences of some of the justices. The willingness to sacrifice the children for our own pleasure and convenience is overwhelmingly in our culture. Our abortion laws are less restrictive that most of the civilized world. Our children are being taught that homosexuality is normal and most network tv programs glorify the gay agenda. We’re allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports. Men are identifying themselves as females so they can use the women’s bathrooms. All we as Christians can do is pray that they will see the evil of their ways and return to the teachings of God and the Bible.
