Richmond County deputies unharmed after fleeing driver shoots at them

Two Richmond County deputies were not injured after a Jefferson County man fired his weapon at them while fleeing a traffic stop early Saturday in Augusta.

Cardaris Young, 25, of Louisville, Ga., was driving a 2014 Ford Taurus when a deputy tried to pull him over just after midnight near John C. Calhoun Expressway. The driver did not stop but fled, continuing on Greene Street, authorities said.

At some point, Young reached 15th Street and fired twice in the direction of Deputies Jamie Champion and Prizette Presberry, authorities said.

Young was eventually taken into custody and is being held in the Richmond County Detention Center on felony charges of aggravated assault upon a law enforcement officer, among other charges.

Champion is an award-winning deputy known for making hundreds of DUI arrests in the county. And Prizette has earned accommodations from the sheriff’s office, including helping in a 2019 incident where officers pulled two people from a burning house on 10th Street.

In the fire case, Cpl. Eard Trimmingham got down on the floor of the residence and crawled through the thick smoke, finding the subject unresponsive lying on the floor. Trimmingham pulled the subject out with the assistance of other deputies. EMS was administered and the pair were taken to the hospital.

“If not for the quick actions of these deputies, our community may have suffered the loss of two citizens,” a sheriff’s press release says.
