A guest at the Motel 6 in Augusta was found dead Thursday afternoon in suspicious circumstances, according to authorities.

The man, whose name has not been released, was found sometime around 12 noon. Deputies were called to the hotel on Boy Scout Road, and the man was pronounced dead at 1:12 p.m. Thursday by the coroner’s office.

“Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and are investigating this as a suspicious death at this time pending autopsy and toxicology reports,” sheriff’s Sgt. William McCarty said.

The coroner’s office also requested the Code Enforcement respond to the aging hotel.

The hotel has been the scene of several crime offenses and drug-related incidents in recent years.

In June 2022, a Martinez man was arrested after he overdosed in a hotel room with a child present. A woman told deputies that the suspect had gone into the bathroom to “shoot up.” Authorities said she also appeared to be under the influence. The juvenile was taken into custody by the Division of Family & Children Services.

In December 2021, a suspect was charged with forcing his way into a guest’s room, demanding him to take his clothes off, throwing him on the bed and choking him. Authorities say the victim grabbed a knife and began stabbing the suspect, causing the man to flee.

In September 2020, a Motel 6 guest was found with meth and was accused of stealing a clerk’s tablet. When deputies arrived, the suspect resisted arrest, and deputies found a plastic bag containing a clear crystal substance as well as digital scales in his hotel room, a report says. The crystal tested positive for methamphetamine.
