An unrestrained Augusta driver was killed Monday afternoon after flipping his car on an interstate exit ramp, authorities said.

Matthew Lowery, 57, was ejected from his vehicle after flipping the car around 1:09 p.m. Monday on the I-20 eastbound exit ramp to I-520 westbound.

“The investigation showed the vehicle exited the roadway in an uncontrolled manner and struck several items before coming to rest upside down,” sheriff’s Sgt. Caleb Lee. “The driver was ejected through the front windshield. This was a single vehicle accident with no other persons or vehicles involved.”

The driver was a resident of the Motel One at 1370 Gordon Highway in Augusta, authorities said. He was a registered sex offender, convicted of child molestation in Columbia County in 2013.
