Next year, the Richmond County Republican Party will host the 12th District Convention, which will be held in Augusta in April.

Steve Sanders, president of the RCRP, said on Oct. 12 the 12th district executive committee met in Augusta to determine where to hold the convention in 2024. There were three counties that submitted bids to hold the convention, and Augusta eventually won.

“We have not had, I don’t think we’ve had the district convention here since 2012,” Sanders said. “Part of the reason is that typically the district convention falls in April, and it’s usually mid-April and of course [we have the Masters during that time].”

In 2024, the convention will take place on April 20, which Sanders said was enough time after the Masters. Because next year is a presential election year, the organization is excited about having all the delegates from the district in Augusta.

“The primary purpose of the conventions in the presidential election years is to elect the delegates from the district that will go to the national convention,” Sanders said.

The only other matter of business that will take place during the convention is approving any resolutions that might come up. Sanders added there are usually one or two speeches, and that Congressman Rick Allen usually speaks since it’s his district.

“We are excited to have it here,” Sanders said. “It’s a great opportunity for folks to come here and be in Augusta. It’s obviously more convenient for us to have it here, it’ll be a lot of work.”

Next year the precinct caucus will be Feb. 24, the county convention will be March 23, the district convention will be April 20 and the state convention will be May 17-18 in Columbus.
