This Saturday, the Universalist Unitarian Church of Augusta is housing a meet and greet style event for CSRA locals to network with like-minded others and activist organizations that align with their values.

Unite Together CSRA is being assembled by 50501 of Augusta Georgia as a part of the greater 50501 organization’s National Day of Action, which falls on April 19.

50501 is a movement which sprung from dissatisfaction with the current presidential administration.

Fifteen non-partisan grassroots organizations from the CSRA are expected to attend Unite Together CSRA on Saturday, including 50501 Veterans, Growing Forward CSRA, AFGE Local 217, Freedom to Read Coalition of Columbia County, CSRA Peace Alliance, Community Works, Red White and Brew, League of Women Voters of the CSRA and the CSRA Good Trouble Coalition.

Gayla Keesee, co-president of the League of Women Voters, said that a number of people who have never been involved in activism are now becoming interested in getting involved.

“We’ve got a lot of those people that have come out and are concerned and are wanting to be a part,” she said.

She said that bringing those people together with people who have been previously involved in activism will cultivate relationships.

“That’s really our purpose, is to pull people together and connect…to sort of build a sustainable and empowered community,” she said.

Keesee said that one thing the event will focus on is driving up engagement in local elections.

“We’ve got elections coming up this year, so it’s important that if you think your energy bills are going up too fast or anything like that, that you participate in the public service commission elections this year,” she said.

She added that those who want to come out should be prepared to find resources for ways to get involved beyond protesting.

“A lot of people just think ‘protest, protest,’ but that’s only one strategy,” she said.

Unite Together CSRA will begin at 1 p.m. and end at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church located at 3501 Walton Way Extension.
