A Town Wings on thin ice for thawing methods

The health inspection world grades a score below 70 as failing, however, no restaurants, pools or hotels received a failing score from inspections conducted on Nov. 10–14.

Worst scores in this week’s health inspection

This week’s lowest health inspection score was a 78 earned by A Town Wings, located at 720 East Robinson Ave., in Grovetown.

During the inspection, the inspector noticed food being improperly recooked, and deducted nine points from the health score.

“Observed chicken wings cooked to 92 degrees F to then be recooked to 165 degrees F or above” the report stated. “Cook wings fully then hold for time.”

The inspector deducted an additional nine points for noticing food being improperly stored.

“Observed blue cheese dressing labelled “keep refrigerated” on counter without temp control,” the report stated. “Toss out dressing and keep all others in walk in cooler under temperature control for cold holding.”

The inspector docked another three points for noticing raw chicken left out to thaw.

“Observed raw chicken wings in prep sink to thaw. Thaw raw chicken under cool running water,” the report stated.

The second lowest score of the week was an 83 given to Boll Weevil Cafe a7 Sweetery, located at 10 James Brown Blvd., in Augusta.

The inspector deducted nine points for witnessing an employee not wash hands before prepping food.

“Observed employee pick up object of the floor, proceed to put on gloves, and prepare food without washing hands,” the report stated. “Wash hands when switching tasks and when touching floor.”

During the inspection, the inspector deducted four more points for a lack of required paperwork on site.

“Observed missing Employee Health Reporting Agreement,” the report stated. “Have all food prep employees read and sign agreement. Have all forms readily available at all times.”

The inspector deducted another four points for the witnessing bacteria build up on kitchen equipment.

“Observed black and brown buildup inside drink nozzles,” the report stated. “Clean. Increase cleaning frequency.”

Following the cafe’s inspection, the third lowest score of the week was an 85 given to both of Double Tree Hotel’s pools, located at 2651 Perimeter Parkway, in Augusta.

The inspector deducted 15 points for an imbalance in pH when recommended levels are between 7.2-7.8.

“pH was less than 7.0,” the report stated.
