Aiken County captures suspect accused of dousing woman with gas

Date: May 11, 2022

Aiken County authorities have ended their manhunt for a suspect accused of assaulting a woman Wednesday and possibly dousing her with gasoline.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 52-year-old Stephen Wright of Jackson, S.C., a parolee with a history of charges for drugs, traffic charges and fleeing police.

The Aiken Bloodhound Team was called to the area of Steinek Drive in Jackson and “successfully tracked and apprehended the suspect,” sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said. The suspect has not been named.

“No burning occurred,” Abdullah said. “The suspect physically assaulted the victim and poured gas or some type of fluid on her.”

Witnesses reported seeing authorities on Quail Ridge Drive and other roads in the area in their manhunt. The manhunt also caused the temporary shutdown of Foreman Road and the lockdown of Redcliffe Elementary School. The lockdown ended in time for dismissal.
