An Aiken County father of three was being remembered Saturday for his love of his children and the sport of polo.

Delmer Walton, 39, of Blackville, was killed early Saturday in a single-vehicle wreck on Surrey Race Road, about 15 miles from his home.

Walton was traveling east near Kittery Street about 2:50 a.m. Saturday when he ran off the right side of Surrey Race Road in his 2004 Toyota Highlander SUV, according to Coroner Darryl Ables. His vehicle overturned and hit a tree, ejecting the unrestrained driver, the coroner said. Walton was pronounced dead on the scene from blunt force injuries.

On his Facebook page, Walton identified himself as owner of Walton Farm Polo, a breeding, boarding and training business that specializes in polo ponies.

On Saturday night, Christopher Shelli remembered “Del” as a “friend, father, and Fort Christopher’s Polo Team professional player.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his children tonight,” Shelli said.

The coroner said his office along with S.C. Highway Patrol are continuing with the investigation into the wreck. Toxicology analysis are pending, Ables said.
