The Salley man who was shot during a weekend gunfight with Aiken County deputies is in stable condition at the hospital, authorities said Monday.
Cody Talley, 30, was shot after he first fired at deputies who had responded to a domestic call with his sister at their home on Depot Avenue. The State Law Enforcement Division will conduct an independent investigation.
Deputies responded to the 300 block of Depot Avenue NE in Salley around 1 a.m. Sunday for a suspect armed with a shotgun. The man’s sister told emergency dispatchers Talley had shown up armed and left.
“Responding deputies searched the area where they found the suspect walking with the firearm,” sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said. “After locating the suspect, he refused to put down his shotgun and continued to walk away. Later during the contact with the suspect, he put down the shotgun and placed one hand behind his back into his waistband where he continued to refuse commands from deputies.”
After being struck with a beanbag round, the suspect pointed a handgun at deputies and fired. The suspect was struck by returned gunfire from officers.
After being taken into custody, deputies rendered aid until Aiken County EMS arrived on scene, Capt. Abdullah said. No deputies were injured.
Talley has a short criminal history in Aiken County, with a January arrest for trespassing and older charges for DUI and other traffic charges. A judge gave Talley credit for time served on the last trespassing charge.
