A Beech Island man who was shot by deputies last week had plotted to kill deputies by luring them to his location with a fake 911 call, according to SLED.
Chaney Asad Jones, 20, has been charged with attempted murder and pointing and presenting a firearm at a person.
A SLED warrant spells out his plot: “The defendant called 911 and reported a man with a gun and when deputies arrived, he pointed a gun at (the officer) and fired one round.”
Lt. Jonathon Clough and Deputy Agnieska Ferrell were the officers involved. Both deputies were placed on temporary administrative leave, sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said.
Deputies first responded to 4002 Columbia Hwy North in Ridge Spring at 8 p.m. May 25. Just after the deputies arrived at the home, they were confronted by a Black male, armed with a handgun. While deputies gave verbal commands to drop the weapon, Jones pointed his weapon towards deputies who responded by firing their weapons at the suspect. The suspect was struck once in his lower torso. Deputies secured the suspect and rendered first aid. He was released from the hospital the same day and held in jail.
The State Law Enforcement Division was asked to investigate. Here is their press release, issued June 2:
“Agents from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division arrested a man Tuesday in connection to the May 25 confrontation in which gunfire was exchanged with deputies from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO).
Deputies were responding to a disturbance call when they encountered the armed man. During the incident, the suspect discharged a firearm toward law enforcement.
Chaney Asad Jones, 20, was charged with attempted murder along with pointing and presenting firearms at a person.
SLED’s investigation into the incident remains active. Information gathered in the SLED investigation of the incident will be summarized in a case file report to be submitted to prosecutors.
This is an ongoing investigation. As such, no other information about the case will be disclosed by SLED at this time. SLED will defer to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office for any information about their deputies.
Jones was booked at the Aiken County Detention Center. The case will be prosecuted by the 2nd Circuit Solicitor’s Office.”
