An Aiken County boy was killed Wednesday after losing control of his ATV, the second ATV death this month in the county, authorities said.

Kurtis Phillips, 15, of Jackson, was riding his Honda all-terrain vehicle around 5 p.m. Wednesday on Bluff Landing Road in Jackson when the accident happened, Coroner Darryl Ables said.

“He lost control, ran off the right side of the road, and struck a tree,” the coroner said. “EMS transported the teenager to Augusta University Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.”

The teenager will be autopsied in Newberry. The Coroner’s Office is continuing with the investigation, Ables said.

The accident comes just a few weeks after a similar ATV death happened in Aiken County. On June 3, 23-year-old Dryth Fulmer of Batesburg was riding an ATV on private property on Holder Road near Hadden Road.

Dryth Fulmer

Fulmer lost control of the vehicle after hitting a slight embankment causing the vehicle to overturn. He died at the scene. Two other occupants in the ATV were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
