Aiken County authorities are investigating the shooting death of an out-of-state man who was found in a ditch in a rural area.

Deputies responded around lunchtime Tuesday after a passerby reported a man lying on the side of Kitchings Road in Williston near Old Barnwell Road, not far from a Baptist church.

“Deputies determined the victim had been shot multiple times and summoned EMS to the scene,” Coroner Darryl Ables said. “The victim was initially transported to Aiken Regional Medical Centers then to Augusta University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 4:29 p.m. (Tuesday).”

The victim was identified as 24-year-old Jarvon Stapleton of Stonecrest, Ga., the coroner said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning in Newberry. The Coroner’s Office along with the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office are continuing with the investigation. No motive or suspects have been announced.

Stapleton is being remembered online by friends and family.

His brother, Jebony Stapleton said this: “Babybro you left a big black hole in my heart with this one. I wish you just call me one last time and tell me ‘Get Up Bihhhh’ baby. Why you leave me without a goodbye man?”
