An Aiken couple is dead in an apparent murder-suicide on Summerhill Avenue, authorities said.

Aiken County Sheriff’s deputies answered a call at 4:28 p.m. Thursday to 3845 Summerhill Ave. Aiken and found a man and woman dead in the master bedroom of their home.

An investigation determined that “37-year-old Yoni Vargas shot his wife, 33-year-old Rosa Salguero-Landaverde before turning the gun on himself and taking his life,” Coroner Darryl Ables said.

The body of Salguero-Landaverde will be autopsied in Newberry. No autopsy is scheduled for Vargas, the coroner said.

The Coroner’s office and the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office are continuing with the investigation.

“It’s a pretty tragic incident. A husband kills his wife and himself and orphans their five children,” sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said. “They were across the street. They are the ones that called for help.”

Vargas was arrested in 2016 for domestic violence and traffic charges, but online records show only a conviction for driving without a license. There is no record for the outcome of the domestic violence charge.
