An overnight fire at an Aiken home has claimed the life of a 64-year-old woman and critically injured her adult daughter, authorities said.
Several children were able to escape the flames early Wednesday, but 64-year-old Sylvia Spann and her daughter, 35-year-old Concetta Spann, were trapped inside.

Aiken Public Safety firefighters arrived around 12:25 a.m. Wednesday at 1338 Aldrich Street in Aiken and were told about the relatives still inside. They entered a window and located the mother and daughter inside a bedroom. After being removed from the home, Sylvia Spann was pronounced dead on the scene, Coroner Darryl Ables said.
Her daughter was transported to Doctors Hospital in critical condition.
Sylvia Spann will be autopsied in Newberry to determine her cause of death. The Coroner’s Office along with the Aiken Department of Public Safety are continuing with the investigation.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
