Tonya Zorn, a 35-year-old woman from Warrenville, was found dead Wednesday in her cell at the Aiken County Detention Center.
She had been awaiting placement at The Morris Village Alcohol and Drug Addiction Treatment Center in Columbia for two weeks, according to online court records.
Zorn had a history of run-ins with the law dating back to 2020, with charges including meth distribution, drug possession, and breach of trust. In 2023, she was sentenced to probation and ordered to undergo inpatient drug treatment. Two weeks ago, Judge Walton McLeod IV ordered her detention until a bed became available at the treatment center, but she never made it there.
On Wednesday, Zorn was found unconscious in her cell and later pronounced dead at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
The S.C Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the Aiken County Coroner’s Office are investigating, though no foul play is suspected.
