An Aiken County man is facing bribery and obstruction charges after allegedly offering a Richmond County deputy over $1,000 cash not to arrest him.
Chance Heath, 21, of Rolling Hills Road, Aiken, was found hiding a gun Monday when the officer answered a call in Augusta about a suspicious person with a weapon. The deputy saw the outline of a gun when he spotted the suspect, so he tried to detain him, authorities said.
After a brief struggle, the deputy handcuffed Heath. During a search, the deputy found the firearm and located $1,022 in cash.
The suspect allegedly told the officer he could keep the money if he let him go. Instead, the officer took Heath to jail for bribery and obstruction, according to a sheriff’s report. The suspect is also being held on an outstanding warrant from another agency.
Heath has pending charges in Aiken County for allegedly dealing heroin, marijuana and other drugs. Those charges have been pending without resolution since his arrest in October 2019, according to online court records.
