Aiken County authorities on Wednesday arrested an Aiken man for the death of Nyasia Dowling, 25, who was found shot to death in a local motel room on Jan. 20.

Dante Jamal Breeland, 32, is charged with murder and weapon possession during a violent crime, Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer announced Wednesday in a brief news release. Deputies found Dowling dead inside an American Hearth Inn motel room shortly after they arrived there on Jan. 20 to investigate reports of shots fired.

Deputies said Dowling was shot at least once. According to Sawyer, the investigation remains open. It was not immediately known what evidence or testimony might have led them to Breeland. They also did not say if Breeland and Dowling were acquainted.

Edgefield County authorities arrested Breeland in 2024 for drug possession and disorderly conduct, records show.
