An Aiken County man has been charged with stabbing his mother and stepfather, with a murder charge following the death of the stepfather, authorities said.

Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables confirmed that a 73-year-old man has died after being stabbed during a incident over the weekend at his rural home.

According to Ables, the incident occurred on Sunday at approximately 1:20 a.m. at the victim’s residence on John Scott Road. The victim, identified as Mark D. Burch, was transported by EMS to Wellstar MCG Health after sustaining multiple stab wounds.

“Mr. Burch succumbed to his injuries (Tuesday) morning at 3:15 a.m.,” Ables said. “Our office responded at 4:22 a.m. to the hospital to continue our investigation.”

Dale Carlin, 50, who lives at the same address, has been charged with murder in connection with the case. Carlin had previously been charged with two counts of attempted murder earlier this week, but authorities added the murder charge following the death of his stepfather.

Authorities say Carlin is accused of the couple in the home. Burch died from his injuries, while his wife was listed in stable condition. A motive was not clear.

An autopsy on Burch is scheduled next week in Newberry. The Aiken County Coroner’s Office is working alongside the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, which continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stabbing.
