Aiken Public Safety sergeant resigns after weekend DUI arrest

Date: March 27, 2022

An Aiken officer has been arrested for allegedly driving drunk, authorities said.

Sgt. Aaron Hunkins, with the Aiken Department of Public Safety, has since resigned after his DUI arrest at 1:02 a.m. Sunday, Lt. Jennifer Hayes said.

The arrest was made by the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office after a traffic stop on Augusta Road near Ash Street. The vehicle was being stopped for speeding and not maintaining the lane, Sheriff’s Capt. Eric Abdullah said. Hunkins was charged with DUI and booked into the detention center.

The arrest comes just one week after Aiken County lost another officer to a DUI arrest. Aiken County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Justin Rutland resigned from the agency after being charged last weekend with DUI in Savannah.

Rutland was a 10-year veteran of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, working most recently in special operations. But he suddenly resigned Monday after he was stopped by the Georgia State Patrol and charged with DUI and failure to maintain lane.
