Amerigroup Georgia’s “Repack the Backpack” Initiative distributed hundreds of school supplies, including notebooks, pen, pencils, folders, binders, paper, and other essential items last Friday.

Despite record-high back-to-school spending, several students find themselves running low or lacking essential school supplies in the new year. The “Repack the Backpack” initiative helps families replace school supplies during the second semester.

“Our back-to-school programs are about more than giving out school supplies. We are boosting kids’ confidence and promoting educational equity by ensuring more universal access to supplies for academic success,” said Mel Lindsey, president of Amerigroup Georgia. “Education is a critical social driver of health. As part of our ongoing commitment to the whole health of our neighbors across Georgia, we are proud to offer supports and resources that empower students to concentrate on their learning, ultimately contributing to happier, healthier lives.”

Amerigroup employees also provided attendees resources and information to maintain their healthcare coverage. Due to the ongoing Medicaid “unwinding” process in Georgia, almost two million Medicaid recipients are faced with challenges. Almost 390,000 enrollees were affected up to October 2023 because of ineligibility or procedural issues.

Amerigroup plans to continue to engage with members across the state by partnering with local agencies and community organizations, distributing Medicaid renewal kits, and assisting healthcare providers.
