The Augusta Planning Commission gave approval at its April 11 meeting to several development projects including a long awaited luxury apartment complex in downtown.

Developers of a complex called The Atticus, which was originally proposed several years ago, applied to amend their application to grow the number of luxury apartments from 54 to 83 units ranging from studios to one and two bedroom apartments.

The site, located at the corner of 10th Street and Ellis Street, was once home to the wildly popular Sandwich City, owned by longtime Georgia House representative Atticus Jerome “Jack” Connell Jr. Connell died in 2013, and the family decided to shutter the sandwich shop in 2018 to make way for a mixed use development.

Along with the upscale apartments, owner Andrea Gibbs, Connell’s daughter, plans to create retail and restaurant space on the first floor of the four story structure; however, there is no indication that Sandwich City will return. Resident amenities will also include a coffee bar, fitness center, pet grooming area and yoga studio.

Outside, the complex will feature a dog park, electric car charging stations and a rooftop patio.

A timeline for the beginning of construction was not revealed.

The commission also greenlit the proposed development of an extended stay hotel, which will be located at 619 13th Street near the medical district. The site is currently owned and occupied by Augusta Concrete, which plans to sell the land and move office operations to a location in West Augusta.

The proposed five-story, 93,000 square feet property is expected to be operated by Residence By Marriott and will include 125 rooms equipped with kitchenettes.

Turn Back The Block, a local non-profit devoted to the revitalization of the Harrisburg area also received the go ahead to build a single family residence at 2017 Battle Row.

All of the applications are expected to be reviewed for approval by the Augusta Commission at its April 19 meeting.
