Burke County law enforcement has announced the arrest of a second person in connection with the 2016 death of a Waynesboro man.
On Wednesday, U.S. Marshals arrested Mitchell Lanell Lambert, 39, in Cumming, Georgia.
Lambert was taken to the Forsyth County Jail and then transferred to the Burke County Detention Center.
Lambert, who is from Waynesboro, has been charged with Murder, Kidnapping, and Armed Robbery in the death of Simon Powell, according to an email from Capt. Jimmy Wylds with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.
“This investigation is still very much active. Additionally, over the last several days Investigators have continued to work the search area where we hope to recovery Simon Powell’s remains. This particular area contains a sizeable pond and we are in the process of draining it after divers were unable to locate any evidence. We will keep you updated as we can. Again, this is an ongoing investigation and we
consider the area we are in a crime scene, so again the location will not
disclosed at this time,” the email said.

On July 13, Burke County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Stacey Welch, 38, in Powell’s death.

Powell was last seen driving his white Ford truck on June 1, 2016. It was later found burned. However, a body was not recovered from the wreckage, according to a June 9 article in The Augusta Press.
According to family members, Powell owned a lumber business and would occasionally hire itinerant workers, but there is no evidence that Powell had any trouble with any of his workers or had any other known enemies, the article said.
Welch provided information that has lead to the search of a Burke County pond.
