Heidi Peck, a private tutor for students with dyslexia and other reading problems, thought patients, staff and physicians at University Hospital would enjoy a little Valentine surprise.

She quickly mobilized children from across the area to create handmade cards to be delivered across the hospital on Feb. 14.

The children, ranging in age from pre-schoolers to elementary school, ended up making hundreds of cards. One school, Warrenville Elementary, also created four gift baskets of snacks for staff working on COVID-19 cohorts.

“I think it just made them feel like they were helping in some way,” Peck said. “If you read the cards, it’s all, ‘Thank you so much.’ ‘Thank you for helping my dad.’ This makes them feel like they’re part of the moment.”

Organizations that contributed cards include: Northington Small Group, Warrenville Elementary, Warrenville First Baptist Children’s  Ministry, First Baptist of Wagener, South Aiken Presbyterian,  St. John’s United Methodist SEED, Children’s (Aiken), Aiken First Baptist Preschool, Tall Pine STEM Academy, and an adult from a local church who made 59 cards.
