Editor’s Note: The Artist Corner focuses on an area artist whose works are currently part of an exhibition. It runs on the first and third Friday each month.

Kimberly Barron was a painter until she touched clay.

“I took my first class in 2017 and fell in love with it,” said Barron, whose pottery is on display at 4P Studios through Saturday, March 6. A pottery teacher at 4P, Barron likes to experiment with shapes. Her vessels aren’t sleek and smooth but have textures to them.

Influenced by nature, Barron’s works have details reflecting what could be found outdoors. Much like trees with lichen or fungus or barnacle-covered shells, her pieces have different sculptural elements included in them.

“I turn my functional vessels into sculptures,” Barron said. “I like lichen and moss. I started putting mushrooms and wood elements on them.”

Barron recently moved to Augusta from Savannah, but she’s already working to make a name for herself in the area’s art scene. She’s had pieces displayed in three different art exhibitions so far.

Barron will be teaching a wheel pottery class at 4P Studios beginning in March. There will be six weekly classes on Tuesdays starting March 23. Classes will be from 6 to 8 p.m. and the cost is $400, which includes all materials, firing and glazing. To sign up, visit the 4P website at www.4pstudiosart.com.

In addition to Barron’s exhibition with fellow potter Harrison Hickman, there are a few other art happenings around town.

The closing reception for “Bold Radiance: Experiencing Existence Colorfully” will be at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at 600 Broad. The exhibition features the paintings of Dan Dyches and Travis Duncan.

Across the river, the North Augusta Cultural Arts Council’s student art show will be on display at the Arts and Heritage Center of North Augusta through March 12. Also, artist Billy S. will have his show “Love One” at the City Gallery at the Municipal Building, 535 Telfair St., through March 15.
