Editor’s Note: The Artist Corner runs on the first and third Friday of each month. It features an artist with a current or upcoming art exhibition.

Rich Klein doesn’t mind if his work isn’t an exact representation of what he’s painting. He’s more concerned with evoking an emotional response.

“I recently did a painting of a horse running. It wasn’t anatomically correct, but you could feel it,” said Klein, whose oils and sketches will be part of the “Landscapes of the Mind” event at 4P Studios from April 13 to May 1. There will be a closing reception from 4 to 6 p.m. on April 25.

Perspective and perception are at the heart of his exhibition. Pieces represent what he sees.

“Every piece is a self-portrait of sorts,” he said. “I want people to see what I see.”

Although Klein was always interested in art, he couldn’t devote the time to it until he retired. His approach to art is different from his approach to his career. Klein has a doctorate in biology. He worked for General Electric and spent about a decade teaching at Aiken Technical College.

Whereas in science, everything must be measured and quantifiable. In Klein’s art, there’s a freedom of expression to go beyond the lines. His artwork explores emotions and places, he said.

“I want people to feel things and think,” he said. “I want them to look at my paintings and think – ‘this is what he was thinking about when he was doing this.’”

Landscapes of the Mind features 27 paintings and 47 drawings.

4P Studios is located at 3927 Roberts Rd., Martinez.

A virtual art exhibition is underway.

Two students with the International Baccalaureate Program at the Academy of Richmond County have created an online art exhibition highlighting the artwork by residents at Brandon Wilde.

There are 74 different works in various media including paintings, sculptures, embroidery, mixed media and jewelry.

Milan Roland and Quinn Yates developed the project to share their love of art and celebrate the residents at Brandon Wilde, according to a news release from Yates.
