The Greater Augusta Arts Council is scaling back two signature events in 2021.

“The third weekend of September will be the Arts City Festival,” said Brenda Durant, executive director of the Greater Augusta Arts Council.

The scaled-down event will replace the popular Arts in the Heart of Augusta usually scheduled for that same weekend. Arts in the Heart, which would’ve celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2020, was cancelled due to COVID-19.

Durant hopes Arts in the Heart will be back in 2022.

The Arts City Festival will have a small radius with fewer stages and activities, she said.

The arts council’s annual wet paint party is a membership event usually held at Sacred Heart Cultural Center, but this year, it will be a virtual one on Feb. 27, Durant said.

The party is a way for artists to show off their talents with artists selling a piece of artwork and keeping 80 percent of the proceeds.

All types of art including photography, sculptures and paintings will be accepted. Pieces must be no larger than 48 inches an any direction, and the asking price is capped at $500.

New to this year’s virtual event will be an auction of arts-related services such as art lessons, graphic design or logo creation, hair braiding or hair styling.

Applications will be accepted until Feb. 7.

Any pieces purchased must be dropped off at the arts council’s office between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 2 or Wednesday, March 3.
