Ashley Browns Talks Top Performers, New High School Football Poll

Passing

Remedee Leaphart (Ridge Spring Monetta)

16 of 28 passing for 288 yards and 5 TDs. Also rushed 14 times for 82 yards and 2 TDs as RS-Monetta won a wild matchup with Denmark-Olar 62-58.

Dalen Cobb (Wash-Wilkes)

Rushed for 192 yards and a pair of TDs. Also, was 12 of 19 passing for 173 yards, including game-winning touchdown pass with less than three minutes left as the Tigers edged Elbert Co. 42-35.

Brooks Pangle (Greenbrier)

Was 13 of 22 for 349 yards and a pair of TDs in Greenbrier’s heartbreaking 35-34 loss to Loganville.

Keshaun Sanders (Laney)

12 for 18 for 158 yards and 2 TDs in Laney’s 42-0 homecoming victory over Glenn Hills.

Ryan Newman (Harlem)

23 of 33 for 274 yards and 2 TDs in Harlem’s 36-29 loss to Lincoln County.

Kaleb Jackson (Evans)

Evans lost to Washington County 43-26, but Jackson was 6 of 12 passing for 117 yards and a TD. He also ran 14 times for 121 yards and a score.

Marshall Flowers (Burke Co.)

12 of 23 for 140 yards and a TD through the air and ran 11 times for 67 yards and a pair of TDs as Burke Co. held on to beat North Augusta 33-27.

Colson Brown (North Augusta)

12 of 17 passing for 211 yards and 3 TDs for the Yellow Jackets in their loss to Burke Co.

Rushing

Zack Blackwell (Augusta Christian)

Blackwell had a monster game with 40 carries for 330 yards and 3 TDs (while also playing linebacker) as the Lions topped Heathwood Hall 33-27.

Jontavious Curry (Thomson)

After playing the first there games with ARC, Curry moved back to Thomson and suited up for the Bulldogs on Friday Night. He did not disappoint as he rushed for 159 yards on just 3 carries and also returned a kickoff 51 yards. 52.5 yards per touch. Not too shabby.

Sam Connell (Augusta Prep)

Rushed for 109 yards and 3 TDs on just 7 carries and also returned a kickoff 90 yards for a score as Augusta Prep cruised past Lake Oconee Academy.

Tevin Gartell (Lincoln Co.)

14 carries for 153 yards and 3 TDs while piling up another 100 yards on kick returns in the Red Devils 36-29 thriller over Harlem. He rushed for a 60 yard TD on the first play from scrimmage and ran one in from 42 yards out on Lincoln County’s final offensive play.

Receiving

Malik Leverett (Greenbrier)

The 6’4 star junior finished with 7 catches for 186 yards and had a touchdown passing, rushing and receiving as Greenbrier fell to Loganville 35-34.

Carl Holmes (Laney)

Holmes caught 4 passes for 80 yards and a pair of TDs for Laney in their gomecoming win over Glenn Hills.

Xavier Davis (North Augusta)

Davis hauled in 4 passes for 108 yards and 2 scores in North Augusta’s loss to Burke County.

Jonathan Howard (Harlem)

“Jon-Jon” caught 7 passes for 158 yards and 2 TDs for Harlem in their 36-29 loss to Lincoln County.

Defense/Special Teams

Quinshawn Hearst (Thomson)

The Junior Standout piled up 16 tackles and 2 tackles for loss in Thomson’s 48-7 win over May River.

Malachi Gordon (Aquinas)

Gordon picked off a pair of passes and also blocked a punt and returned it for a score as Aquinas beat Strong Rock Christian 33-7.

Drew Stevens (North Augusta)

Stevens nearly helped North Augusta rally for a win over Burke Co. by nailing field goals from 43 and 50 yards. He was also a perfect 3 for 3 on Extra Point Attempts in the 33-26 loss.

The Author

Sports Columnist - Ashley, or “A.B.” as he is known, was born and raised in the Augusta Area, graduating from Lakeside High School in 1989.
