Athlete spotlight: Khalon Hudson

Date: February 18, 2022

One thousand career points. Not many high school players can say that, especially as a junior.

Khalon Hudson, a 6-foot-4-inch junior at Westside High School, scored his 1,000th career point this season against Laney on Friday, Jan. 28, on the Patriots’ home court.

“The 1,000-point club achievement was a well-deserved accomplishment,” said Westside Coach Jerry Hunter. “Khalon entered his freshman year as a starter and averaged 18 to 20 points per game. Scoring 1,000 points before becoming a senior was not on the radar however, just as time always proves; perseverance, persistence, patience and endurance are the key ingredients to overall success.”

Hudson is currently averaging a double-double with 18.4 points per game and 12.1 rebounds in his junior season.

While he has been dominating on the court, Hunter says Hudson dominates in the classroom as well.

“Khalon’s persona is what makes him special,” he said. “From day one, he has been an inquisitive young man. His determination and work ethic both on and off the court is quite impressive. Besides being an extremely talented athlete, he also has a 4.1 grade point average.”

Hunter said Hudson is a great person. He would like to see Khalon accomplish in his future endeavors after high school.

“As a coach I would like to see Khalon make his family proud. He’s an against all odds type of guy,” Hunter said. “He loves his family and always puts them first. I would definitely love to see him accomplish his goal of attending college whether it’s an athletic or academic scholarship, he has the tools be a leader but most importantly a great human being. The world belongs to the enthusiasts who keeps his cool. This is who I see Khalon as in the years to come. An individual that endured the hardships and understood it’s the journey that matters most, and not the destination.”
