Athlete Spotlight: Ky’ Shonna Brown

Every basketball player wants a point guard who enjoys getting her teammates involved, and Ky’ Shonna Brown is just that.

Brown is a 5-foot-11-inch guard and one of the captains for the T.W. Josey High School varsity women’s basketball team.

She enjoyed herself Tuesday against the Glenn Hills Spartans in a dominating 75-7 win with 11 points and even a few flashy passes to help get her teammates a bucket.

“This was my first game back, and I really just wanted to have fun,” said Brown. “I am very skilled, but being we play under such a strict system, I don’t get to show my flashiness, so in a game like this, it is all about being disciplined but at the same time having fun. I wanted to take the opportunity to show it and get my teammates involved.”

Brown grew up around basketball with her entire family playing the sport. She says she doesn’t really have any favorite players she idolizes but just loves the game of basketball.

“Growing up around basketball allowed me to build the passion for it,” she said. “I just have a love for the sport in general.”

Jawan Bailey, head coach of Josey’s women’s varsity basketball team, spoke very highly of Brown, especially her passing skills.

“We’re a pass first team; we are always looking for our teammates in open spots,” said Bailey. “I really think all of our kids are pass first. She is one with great court vision and a lot of those passes tonight you won’t see a lot of kids in this area able to make those passes, so she is just able to elevate our team a little higher.”

The] Josey senior has committed to play basketball next season for Jacksonville University, a Division I college. She said she believes she can bring a lot to the university and the team and hopes one day to eventually go on to play at the professional level.

“Leadership, a great person on and off the court, just help the team as much as I can,” said Brown. “Do the same thing I did here to get myself in this position and hopefully go pro.”

The Josey Eagles won the basketball 2A Georgia High School State Championship last season but did lose earlier in the year region tournament to Butler. Josey is currently 13-5 on the season this year. Brown and the Eagles have high hopes to win the region this year and add another state title to their resume.

Josey’s next game will be on the road against Jefferson County Friday, Jan. 28. Tip off is at 6 p.m.
