Atlanta, GA – As the hurricane season begins, Atlanta Gas Light is urging customers to take proactive steps in preparing for what is expected to be an active season, with forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicting six to ten hurricanes, including up to five reaching Category 3 or higher.
With safety being their top priority, Atlanta Gas Light is emphasizing the importance of preparedness and shares key safety tips to help residents protect themselves, their families, and their homes during severe weather events, according to a press release from Atlanta Gas Light.
Here are Atlanta Gas Light’s essential tips for handling natural gas safety before, during and after hurricanes:
Gas leak detection
- If you detect the “rotten egg” odor of natural gas, leave the area immediately and call 911 from a safe location.
- Look for signs like blowing dirt, discolored vegetation, or bubbling in standing water that may indicate a gas leak.
- Avoid using any ignition sources like cell phones, matches, or motor vehicles near a suspected leak.
- Contact Atlanta Gas Light’s emergency response line at 1-877-427-4321 for assistance.
Generator safety
- Proper use of natural gas-powered generators is crucial. Ensure that the generator is never used in an enclosed space.
- Never backfeed your house wiring by plugging a generator into a wall outlet. Instead, plug appliances directly into the generator or use a suitable extension cord.
- Contact Atlanta Gas Light prior to purchasing or installing a natural gas generator to ensure the system meets the necessary load requirements for safe operation.
Meter safety
- Familiarize yourself with the location of your gas meter.
- Do not attempt to turn off the gas valve yourself; only qualified personnel should handle this.
- After the storm, ensure that your gas meter is accessible and free from debris to prevent damage during cleanup.
- In case of damage to the meter or exposure of underground gas lines, leave the area immediately and call 911 and Atlanta Gas Light at 1-877-427-4321.
Damage prevention
- Heavy winds and saturated ground can lead to tree roots interfering with underground utility lines. Before cutting down trees, contact Georgia 811 to mark utility lines.
- If you notice any gas line damage or an exposed meter, immediately evacuate the area and report it to authorities.
Atlanta Gas Light is urging all customers to take precautionary steps seriously to ensure their safety and mitigate risks during hurricane season, according to a press release from Atlanta Gas Light.
