The Augusta University women’s basketball team is coming off a season in which it finished fifth in the Peach Belt Conference standings with a record of 6-8. The team is looking to make a jump and compete for a conference title next season.

Head Coach Millette Green has growth and improvement planned for her squad this off-season. Green has already signed four players to join the Jaguars in the upcoming 2021-2022 season.

“Currently, we have four players signed in this class. We are looking to complete our class with an experienced point guard and a physical post,” Green said.

AU Athletic Director Clint Bryant said he expects great things from the women’s team in the upcoming season. He believes that the team is “one true college point guard” away from becoming a championship-caliber team.

Team rosters will be larger than normal this year with graduating seniors taking advantage of an extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA. Coach Green expects to hold 16 players on her roster for next year, up from 11 last year.

“We currently have 10 returners and four signees in this class, and I plan to bring in another guard and post to round things off,” Green said.

Aside from recruitment, Green and her coaching staff have also developed a series of off-season workouts for their players aimed to improve strength, conditioning and overall skill. According to Green, Assistant Coach Celeste Stewart put together these voluntary workout plans for players to take advantage of during their training.

“I emphasized to the players that champions are made in the off-season. It requires a commitment from every person in our program to improve during the summer,” Green said.

The NCAA has also made an adjustment to its rules that allows players to request voluntary workouts with their coaches starting July 5. Green said she expects players to take full advantage of these opportunities.

The Jaguars have improved each year under Green. Over the last three seasons, they went from being a bottom-tier team in the Peach Belt to competing for a spot in the conference tournament.
