The Augusta bicyclist who was struck by a second vehicle two weeks ago while being prayed over by a church group has died.

Marico Dorsey, 53, died Wednesday evening at Augusta University Medical Center from injuries suffered in the Jan. 11 wreck on Olive Road near Eagles Way, Coroner Mark Bowen said.

The victim’s sister, Robyn Anderson, had posted an update the day after the accidents, saying Dorsey required spinal cord surgery and suffered severe bone breakage. The coroner said he died at 6:65 p.m. Wednesday, and no autopsy will be performed.

The accident was especially sad because members of The Purpose Center nearby came out to surround Dorsey and pray for him when a van suddenly came along and struck them, including Dorsey. Several of them were rushed to the hospital in critical condition with serious injuries. Two of the three were released soon after the accident.

In a Jan. 12 post on their page, the church group said those praying around Dorsey were a few of their after-school program volunteers.

“Unfortunately, a man riding his bike was hit by a car and because it happened outside of our building, our Purpose Center staff was notified,” the post said. “Our staff ran to check on the man in the accident, and as they waited on the ambulance, they formed a prayer circle to pray for the man and protect him from being hit by another vehicle. As they were praying, another vehicle struck the prayer circle. Many were injured and one remains in critical condition.”

The post said the group took it an opportunity to minister to their students who saw the accident while modeling faith and resilience. The center is led by Pastor Yannik McKie.

“It’s hard to understand God sometimes, but when I am not sure what He is doing, I try to insert trust instead of suspicion,” the writer said. “Please be in prayer for us as we aim to support our community and serve those who are suffering.”

No charges have been announced in the accident.
