Date: April 04, 2023

An Augusta bicyclist was killed Monday night after being struck by a vehicle on Mike Padgett Highway.

Richard Mennemeyer, 54, was riding his bike southbound in the northbound lanes of Mike Padgett Highway after dark when he was struck by a northbound vehicle, Coroner Mark Bowen said.

Richmond County authorities said the woman who struck Mennemeyer was turning onto Mike Padgett Highway from Debra Street when the collision occurred. Mennemeyer was pronounced dead on the scene at 9:54 p.m. Monday, the coroner said.

Mennemeyer was a resident of Motel One at 1370 Gordon Highway in Augusta, about eight miles away from the wreck.

He was a registered sex offender who made local headlines in 2017 for traveling from Colorado to Augusta to have sex with a 14-year-old Augusta girl, authorities said. But the girl was actually a GBI agent who had been posing as a child online for two months.

Mennemeyer spent two and a half years of a 10-year sentence in prison before his release in 2020. He then returned to live in Augusta.
