From the traffic circle connecting Twiggs Street, James Brown Boulevard and Wrightsboro Road, all the way down to Dyess Park, crowds of eager onlookers were camped out for Augusta’s 2024 Martin Luther King Jr. Parade.

The City of Augusta collaborated with the local chapter of the NAACP to coordinate the festivities, which kicked off at 1 p.m., starting at the Dyess Park Community Center, maneuvering to Wrightsboro, Laney Walker Boulevard and ending at Johnson Motors on 11th Street.

High school marching bands, flag corps and dance teams sustained rhythm and style, while local officials — including the Augusta Commission and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office — joined the procession exhorting Augustans to cheerfully remember the legacy of the beloved civil rights leader.

Several campaigning candidates were also part of the cavalcade, including district attorney hopeful Amber Brantley, Don Clark, who’s running for the District 5 seat on the Augusta Commission, 12th District congressional candidate Daniel Jackson, and Richmond County Sheriff candidate Eugene “Gino Rock” Brantley.
