Augusta city offices closing at noon due to hurricane – sandbags, free transit available

Augusta, Georgia offices will close at noon today, August 30, 2023, due to Hurricane Idalia and the tropical storm warning issued for this area by the National Weather Service.

Augusta 311 will continue regular operating hours today of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to respond to non-emergency service requests.

The city is offering free sandbags at 2316 Tobacco Road while supplies last. Residents can get up to five bags.

Augusta-Richmond County Emergency Management Agency is partnering with the American Red Cross to provide storm shelters if needed, although none were in use mid-Wednesday.

Augusta Transit is providing free rides to local homeless shelters, and residents can call 706-821- 1721 to schedule a ride.
