Date: December 11, 2024

Augusta commissioners finalized the hire Tuesday of Tameka Williams as director of recreation and parks after a three-hour closed session.

The commission released the name of Williams, who recently served as deputy director of recreation for Richland County, S.C., on Nov. 19, but waited three weeks to take final action.

In the meantime, the city released the applications submitted by three other finalists for the position.

The unanimous vote Tuesday was 9-0 with commissioners Brandon Garrett and Alvin Mason again absent for personal reasons.

The commission set Williams’ salary at $115,000 and included a car allowance and moving expenses.

Williams spent about 20 months at interim executive director for Richland County and about six years as its deputy director. Her position ended there in February, according to her application.

Williams has a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice and previously spent 20 years with the Suffolk, Va., Parks and Recreation department.

The city has been without a permanent recreation director since the February resignation of embattled former director Maurice McDowell, who resigned . At its last meeting, the commission nixed plans to audit the department.

Tuesday’s vote followed a three-hour closed-door session called for the purpose of discussing personnel.

The only other action taken by the commission in open session Tuesday was the hire of Sean Foreman as accounting manager at a salary of $85,000.
