Georgia’s busiest Disaster Recovery Center closes its doors in Augusta this week to reopen in a new location Tuesday in Hephzibah.
To date, more than 14,000 have visited the Augusta center located at the Hub for Community Innovation on Chafee Avenue, according to FEMA. That’s the busiest in the state for survivors of Hurricane Helene.
The deadline to apply for aid passed Feb. 7, when FEMA had approved more than 209,000 applications for assistance and nearly $300 million in assistance for hurricane survivors.
FEMA “works in coordination with the state” to determine when a DRC will open and close, said Nikki Gaskins Campbell, FEMA media relations specialist.
The Richmond County DRC in Augusta will close at 6 p.m. Friday. The new DRC location opens at 8 a.m. Tuesday at Diamond Lakes Branch Library in Hephzibah. The center will be open through Feb. 28.
The DRC remains a “one-stop shop” for disaster survivors to check the status of their application, ask questions, upload documents and meet with representatives of the U.S. Small Business Administration, Gaskins Campbell said.
“We want disaster survivors in the CSRA to know that we remain committed to Georgia and will remain in the state for as long as we’re needed,” she said.
FEMA is hosting a housing resource fair from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Henry Brigham Community Center in Augusta.
