The Augusta Fire Department has proudly announced this year’s Firefighter of the Year in recognition of his exceptional dedication, leadership and service to the community.
Sgt. Evan Scureman has been named the 2025 Firefighter of the Year by the Augusta Fire Department to commend his selfless service and commitment to protecting the lives and property of Augusta residents, according to a press release from the Augusta Fire and Emergency Management Department.
Beginning his journey with the Augusta Fire Department on Jan. 1, 2012, Scureman started as a Firefighter I at Station 17.
“Through hard work and commitment, he advanced to Sergeant on Aerial Truck 1, where he has served for 11 years,” stated a press release from the Augusta Fire and Emergency Management Department.
Scureman’s dedication was especially evident to the Augusta Fire Department during Tropical Storm Helene, when debris blocked his driveway, making it impossible to drive to work. However, determined to fulfill his duty, he began walking down Washington Road toward the station.
His team then dispatched a command vehicle to pick him up, a moment that embodied the resilience and commitment of Augusta’s first responders, according to a press release from the Augusta Fire and Emergency Management Department.
“His leadership, mentorship, and willingness to go above and beyond have made a lasting impact on his fellow firefighters and the citizens of Augusta,” stated a press release from the Augusta Fire and Emergency Management Department.
In recognition of his service, Scureman has also been named a Hometown Hero by the Masters Tournament Outreach Program.
“As firefighters we are always ready to serve, no matter the challenge,” said Fire Chief Antonio Burden. “Sgt. Scureman’s determination, leadership and dedication to the Augusta Fire Department and the community truly set him apart. He is a well-deserving recipient of this honor.”
As part of this distinction, he and a guest have been invited to attend the 2025 Masters Tournament on April 12-13 and a special Hometown Heroes Reception in his honor.
“The Augusta Fire Department commends Sgt. Evan Scureman for his selfless service and commitment to protecting the lives and property of Augusta’s residents,” stated a press release from the Augusta Fire and Emergency Management Department.
