The Augusta Fire Department responded to a call on Monday, Dec. 4 on the 900 block of Jones Street at approximately 7 p.m.
According to a Facebook post from Augusta, Ga. Fire/EMA, when firefighters arrived they noticed heavy smoke and fire on the second floor of the building.
“Truck one and engine two entered and quickly extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation,” according to the Facebook post.
Photos on the Augusta, Georgia Fire/EMA Facebook page show the building housed Naaiya’s Antiques & Flowers and was near the parking garage on Reynolds Street. In front of the building is a historical marker discussing LaFayette visiting Augusta.
According to the Historical Marker Database, that location is the site of the Planter’s Hotel, which burned in 1839. The Marquis de LaFayette was entertained there when he visited Augusta in March 1825. When he arrived, LaFayette was greeted by a procession of soldiers, musicians, clergymen and citizens. Many festivities were planned to honor him.
