Augusta Fire Department has been awarded a federal grant to support wellness and fitness programs for Augusta firefighters.

U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock announced the grants Friday. They come through FEMA’s assistance to firefighters grant program, the city said in a statement.

With a non-federal match of $24,287, the combined grant of $268,261 will fund the purchase of fitness equipment for Augusta fire stations.

“Sen. Warnock and I will never stop championing Georgia’s heroic fire departments, and these resources will help them respond to emergencies that threaten lives and property,” Ossoff said in the statement.

“This grant will provide critically-needed resources to our fire department and enable them to continue working to keep our community safe,” Augusta Mayor Garnett Johnson said. “I am thankful for Sen. Ossoff and Chief (Antonio) Burden’s efforts to secure this funding for Augusta-Richmond County.”

Burden added that the grant is vital to keep firefighters safe.

“Augusta Fire Department is propelled by the assistance to firefighters grant as a vital flame of support in the blazing heart of service,” Burden said. “This substantial grant fuels our mission, igniting the resources we need to safeguard our community’s wellbeing.”
