An inmate at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center was hospitalized last week after being stabbed with a shank, authorities said.
Antonio D. Bush Jr., 31, was stabbed in the back and wrist on May 9 and was treated for stitches at an Augusta hospital.
Authorities say a guard was attempting to place the hefty 295-pound prisoner into his cell when 17-year-old Cecil Martin Jr. ran out of his cell with a metal shank in his hand and stabbed the victim. Officers were able to push Bush into his cell and close the door for safety before taking Martin into custody.
Inmates continue to create sharpened shanks in the jail from pieces taken from the decaying structure. During a tour last year, reporters and city commissioners were shown two tables full of metal pieces where the inmates had used portions of the lighting housing to transform them into “shanks.” Jail officials continue to search cells to locate the hand-made weapons with several arrests.
Last month, in an unpublicized incident, inmate Devin Allen-Glover allegedly stabbed inmate Lonell Davis in his left shoulder. Authorities say he used an improvised shank around dinnertime April 27 while stabbing the victim in the left shoulder in A-pod.
Authorities say that stabbing happened after an argument and while the victim was lying on the table in the day room. Witnesses say Allen-Glover went in the room and came out a few moments later, raised his arm, and stabbed Davis. The 26-year-old victim suffered a puncture wound to his shoulder.
Allen-Glover, 22, faces new charges of aggravated assault and possession of a deadly weapon by an inmate. He was in jail awaiting trial on 62 pending charges connected to gang violence.
In the latest stabbing, Cecil Martin is in jail awaiting trial on murder and weapons charges for allegedly participating in the February shooting death of 21-year-old Michael Nixon on Tullocks Hill Drive.
After last week’s stabbing, the teen now faces additional charges of aggravated assault and possession of a deadly weapon by an inmate.
Bush is awaiting trial for recent drug charges as well as kidnapping and aggravated assault charges dating back five years, serious offenses that have not been resolved in court. Bush is a convicted felon who has only received probation for a long list of convictions over the years, including possession of a controlled substance, theft by receiving stolen property and statutory rape.
