The City of Augusta joined communities around the world in observing World AIDS Day on Monday.
Mayor Garnett Johnson issued an official proclamation recognizing Dec. 1, 2025, as World AIDS Day in Augusta.
Augusta Housing and Community Development hosted a ceremony focused on education, awareness and community support for individuals and families affected by HIV and AIDS, according to a news release.
“The City of Augusta stands alongside all individuals, families, and neighbors affected by HIV/AIDS and remains committed to fostering a strong and informed community,” it said.
Augusta HCD has distributed federal HOPWA (Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS) funding to local organizations for at least a decade.
Worldwide, over 44 million people have died from AIDS-related illnesses since the start of the epidemic in 1981.
In 2024, 40.8 million people were living with HIV, with 31.6 million accessing antiretroviral therapy. Women and girls accounted for 45% of new infections.
In 2023, the 13-county East Central Public Health District had a total of 2,450 diagnoses, with 1,699 in Richmond County.
