Augusta man arrested in Dunkin’ murder; second man sought

John Scarboro

Date: October 22, 2022

Richmond County authorities have arrested one man and are seeking a second in Monday night’s deadly shooting outside the Dunkin’ location on Washington Road in Augusta.

John Lee Scarboro, 35, was charged Friday with murder and weapon possession in the shooting death of 32-year-old Reginald Johnson. The sheriff’s office is also seeking 20-year-old Julius Riddick for murder. His photo and a wanted poster have not been released.

The two murder suspects allegedly engaged in a gunfight outside the popular donut shop late Monday. The victim was in Scarboro’s car and was struck in the head by the gunfire, although authorities are not clear on whose bullet struck him. Scarboro was also shot in the leg in the gun battle and was hospitalized until Friday.

Scarboro served time for a 2014 homicide committed by three suspects. In that case, Michael Hanson, 32, was killed outside the Bi-Lo at Southgate Shopping Center in Augusta.

Friends say Hanson had simply gone out to get ice cream for his three children when he was killed during an apparent robbery attempt.

Scarboro pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter and got a five-year prison sentence. Co-defendant Ricardo Lavert Jones was also given five years for voluntary manslaughter while the third killer, Bartrell Griffin, received a 15-year prison sentence.
