Augusta man charged with shooting local victim overnight

Anthony Tillman II, victim

Date: September 16, 2023

An Augusta man was fatally shot outside a suspect’s house on Fairmont Street early Friday, and authorities have charged the suspected gunman.

Traveon Wade, 21, was charged with murder, weapon possession and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. He is accused of killing 33-year-old Dwayne Anthony Tillman II of Cadden Road.

Authorities responded to 2839 Fairmont St. where Wade lives around 12:30 a.m. Friday and found the victim with fatal injuries. The coroner’s office arrived later and pronounced him dead at 1:45 a.m.

Wade told authorities that he was defending his friend from Tillman, who he claimed was trying to rob the friend. He said that is why he shot Tillman.

A mugshot was not immediately available for Wade, and he has no previous record in Richmond County, according to online records.

In January, authorities were investigating gunfire on Fairmont Street when Wade told them he had been fighting his stepfather outside their home. He said the stepfather retrieved his gun from inside the house and shot into the attic in anger. The stepfather, 51-year-old Lance Plummer, was arrested for reckless conduct and pointing or presenting a firearm in that January case. He got probation.
